Man allegedly goes on violent, racially motivated rampage
A man will remain behind bars to undergo a mental health assessment after allegedly carrying out a series of racially-motivated attacks in Sydney’s eastern suburb of Randwick.
25-year-old Shai Jevan Lewis is accused of launching last night’s shocking rampage in which several people were punched in the face and kicked.
At about 9.45pm, he allegedly approached a woman on Avoca Street at Randwick and punched her in the face.
He then allegedly continued his violent spree on Belmore Road, punching and kicking a 70-year-old man, leaving him with a fractured nose and eye socket.
Another victim, a 26-year-old woman, has bruising and swelling.
A 30-year-old man attempted to intervene and was also punched in the face numerous times.
That’s when a group of workmen stepped in, managing to restrain the man until police arrived.
Lewis has been charged with three counts of reckless grievous bodily harm and four counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and has been refused bail.
Inspector Aaron Wunderlich tells Ben Fordham says police allege the assaults were racially motivated.
