A man has been charged with murder after he allegedly mowed down the victim with his car and attacked him with an axe in Sydney’s south-west.
Police were called to Sydney Luker Road in Cabramatta West just before 9pm last night after reports of a fight.
A 59-year-old man was found dead at the scene with severe head injuries.
Police believe the man was deliberately run down by a car driven by a 75-year-old man.
The driver is the ex-partner of the victim’s girlfriend.
Witnesses say the older man got out of the car and repeatedly attacked the victim, hitting him in the head with an axe.
A neighbour tried to intervene, telling Macquarie National News police reporter Alice Hogg, he tackled the 75-year-old man to the ground.
“I saw him try to run off and then I tackled him.
“When I tackled him I saw the axe and then I just threw it away.”
Detectives are looking into CCTV footage which allegedly shows the man walking on a nature strip before the car veers towards him.
The 75-year-old man was taken to hospital under police guard and has since been charged with murder.
