Mark Waugh doubtful of Tim Paine’s future in Test cricket team
Australian cricket great Mark Waugh has expressed doubt scandalised ex-captain Tim Paine will be selected for the Ashes.
Cricket Australia have stated Paine will remain available for the summer after resigning from the captaincy, but Waugh told Jim Wilson his initial impression is that a new wicket-keeper will replace him.
“I’d say it’s going to be tough for him to hold his spot in the team now.
“He’s 36 years of age, he’s coming back from injury, and he’s got this scandal hanging over his head … there’s a lot of things against Tim Paine now.”
Meanwhile, Waugh believes the captaincy is “set in stone” to be passed to current vice-captain Pat Cummins.
“Someone like a Steve Smith might be a good vice-captain; experience there and someone to lean on.”
“Alex Carey would be the logical choice for the wicket-keeper.”
