Mining industry sounds the alarm: Labor could bring in carbon tax by stealth
The mining industry is warning Labor may bring back the controversial carbon tax.
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese told Ray Hadley they won’t introduce a carbon tax if they win government.
Labor MP Pat Conroy says the nation’s 215 polluters are already ‘covered’ by the Coalition’s existing Safeguard Mechanism.
But shadow energy minister Chris Bowen has confirmed coal mines would be “forced to comply with Labor’s more stringent safeguard mechanism”.
Leading coal mine Whitehaven argues the two statements can’t exist together.
CEO Paul Flynn told Ben Fordham they want clarity.
“The comments that have been made seem to indicate that the safeguard mechanism would be turned into a carbon tax.”
