Minister calls for tougher foot and mouth security at borders
The NSW Agriculture Minister has called for tougher biosecurity measures at the border to deal with an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Indonesian livestock.
The disease which was first detected in Bali last week could devastate Australian meat exports to the tune of $80 billion.
“We’re working with the Feds to say let’s ramp up that surveillance,” Dugald Saunders told Ray Hadley.
“If you’ve been to Bali, you should expect to have your bags thoroughly inspected when you return.”
Mr Saunders believes the heightened security would help ensure travellers declare things like soiled shoes and clothes upon their return to Australia.
“We’re not saying you’re doing the wrong thing, … we just need to know about it,” he said.
