In one of the most remarkable Australian Olympic stories in recent memory, Saya Sakakibara has battled back from injury and personal heartbreak to win gold in BMX racing.

Winning all seven of her races at these Olympics, she dominated the field and managed to stay out of trouble in the final to win Australia’s first-ever gold medal in the event.

Just three years ago, she was stretchered off the course after crashing out in Tokyo, while not long before that she saw her brother Kai – himself a former BMX racer – sustain a serious brain injury while riding.
