Mother of teenager stabbed with religious knife in shock over court’s decision

The mother of a teenage boy stabbed twice in a schoolyard fight has slammed a court’s ‘lenient’ penalty on the attacker.
The court heard the pair, who were in different grades and did not know each other, were throwing punches before the offender pulled out the 10cm knife from beneath his clothes.
The offender, who is now 16-years-old walked away with the judge sentencing him to a three year community corrections order.
District Court Judge Sophia Beckett found the offender was allowed to carry the blade for religious reasons, ruling the blade was part of the offender’s faith.
The victim’s mother Fiona, told Mark Levy, her son who is now aged 18-years-old was in shock following the decision.
“He fluctuates from being incredibly upset, to incredibly angry.
“It’s just been a horrific experience, I wouldn’t want any parent to go through something like this.”

Mark Levy was fired up following the interview, saying the ruling was beyond inadequate.
“Everyone knows in the system that the sentence imposed is virtually like being hit with a feather and that comes from people in the justice system.”
“Like I said to Fiona, the criminal justice system should be a lot better than it currently is.”
