The mother of a transitioning adult has called for reforms to health checks required before undergoing reassignment.

Lisa* contacted Ray Hadley yesterday, desperate to tell her story as the mother of someone who has transitioned amid other health issues.

She said her child, although an adult, was undergoing mental health treatment that should have required more than the standard level of informed consent before proceeding.

She says subsequent medical implications had been “terribly distressing”.

“When you have an underlying medical condition, that needs to be sorted out first,” she said.
