The academic results of Australian students are not improving, despite more than $20 billion of government funding for schools in over a ­decade.

Preliminary results from the 2019 NAPLAN tests have shown students’ scores have not changed since it began 10 years ago.

There was some improvement for primary school students, including Year 3 reading, spelling and grammar and Year 5 reading, spelling and numeracy, but none of this was carried over into secondary school.

“There’s a lot of money that’s been pumped into education and NAPLAN itself has been one of the greatest wastes that we’ve been able to achieve.

“We can keep tinkering at the edges of this dead duck that is NAPLAN or we can decide that there’s got to be a better way.”
