Natalie Bassingthwaighte’s ‘real struggle’ reflected in ‘Jagged Little Pill’ role
Alanis Morissette’s musical Jagged Little Pill hits Sydney’s Theatre Royal from December 2, and Australians will be the first audience to see it out of Broadway.
Leading lady Natalie Bassingthwaighte plays drug-addicted mother Mary Jane Healy, and told Deborah Knight the “really important, special story” was seven years in the making.
Writer Diablo Cody of Juno fame, and Morissette’s music and lyrics have made a “win-win combination”.
“It really moved me so much; there were a lot of tears, there was lots of laughter, and it just felt seamless.
“I was 20 when [Jagged Little Pill] came out, so it was just iconic for me.
“I had a real struggle in those early twenties, and I felt like … went on the ride with Alanis, and that she … gave us permission to be able to be vulnerable, to be able to speak up, to be able to be heard.”
