New ovarian cancer treatment labelled a ‘game-changer’
A game-changing treatment for ovarian cancer has been approved for use for women in advanced stages of the deadly disease.
About 45 per cent of women diagnosed with the disease die within five years.
The new drug, Zejula, will be available to women diagnosed with ovarian cancer who have responded to existing treatments such as chemotherapy and surgery.
Royal North Shore Hospital medical oncologist Dr Sally Baron-Hay told Deborah Knight it will save lives.
“It can be hundreds and thousands of dollars over the three years it is prescribed so it will be unaffordable for quite a lot of patients.
“Hopefully this year it will available, subsidised by the government.”
