New public housing plan hopes to ‘break the cycle’

The NSW Government has introduced a trial to encourage people in public housing into the workforce.

Currently, less than a quarter of social housing tenants are in the workforce.

Under the state government’s new plan, 20 properties will be set aside for people to skip the queue if they take a time-limited lease while they complete their education and look for a job.

The program will also help existing public housing tenants with education and employment.

NSW Social Housing Minister Pru Goward tells Chris Smith they want to “break the cycle of disadvantage”.

“We’ve got to be able to say to people, public housing is not forever.

“You should not be seeing this as your end destination.

“You should be seeing this as a stepping stone to your ability to live independently like everybody else.”
