New survey shows pilots are ‘pressured’ to fly despite being tired
The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has formed a new pilot division as aviation workers are raising concerns over safety.
A new Australian survey has revealed many aviation workers are concerned that “unfit” and fatigued pilots have been pressured to fly planes.
TWU released a poll of 150 pilots on Tuesday to mark the creation of a new division, which was approved by the Fair Work Commission.
Rostering practices, fatigue management and uncertainty was also key concern in the survey.
TWU National Assistant Secretary Nick McIntosh told Chris Smith the results are “upsetting”.
“We don’t have enough trained people anymore doing the functions that can mean a plane can just take off in the first place.”
The new division is aiming to lift standards across the entire sector.
