Queensland great Billy Slater is in the Maroons’ hot seat after signing an Origin coaching contract for the next two series.

The newly inked coach told Jim Wilson he’s not underestimating the threat posed by the unified NSW Blues.

“I feel a bit strange when people are congratulating me, ’cause I don’t feel I’ve achieved anything as yet.

“I understand the enormity of the position; I’ll certainly dive into it with a lot of respect.”

Billy admitted he has some jitters taking on his first head coaching role, but defended his qualifications and “strong” support team.

“I’m not coaching medicine, I’m not teaching doctors how to perform brain surgery … football is what I know best.”
