Nine-year-old school student protesting Australian national anthem
A Queensland primary school is threatening to suspend a nine-year-old girl who has been refusing to stand for the national anthem.
The Year Four student, who has been given detention, says she won’t sing the anthem because it’s about advancing White Australia.
She says the line about Australia being a young country is disrespectful to indigenous Australians.
“She says it’s not inclusive of indigenous Australians…” says Alan Jones.
“The school wouldn’t be there if it were not for the wealth of Australians generated since colonisation which has helped her and a lot of other people.”
He says the solution is “pretty simple”.
“Call the parents in and say, ‘These are the rules, if you don’t like them leave’.
“But if she wants a history lesson, sit her down and explain what has happened since colonisation and the wealth the battlers have earnt and the tax that they’ve paid.
“Someone needs to give this girl a bit of a lesson.”
