‘No benefit’: Lung Foundation of Australia calls for ban

Article image for ‘No benefit’: Lung Foundation of Australia calls for ban

The CEO of the Lung Foundation is calling for silica-based products to be banned.

Mark Brooke has come forward and called for a ban on products that contain silica causing silicosis.

He told Ray Hadley that silicosis is ‘preventable’, but warns there are other serious diseases caused by exposure to silica.

The Lung Foundation released a National Silicosis Prevention Strategy along with a National Action Plan that can prevent future exposure.

Mark Brooke has come forward and called for a ban due to believing that there is “no benefit” with the product.

Unlike asbestos which can take decades to diagnose silicosis, exposure to silica has been shown to accelerate the disease.

“It is affecting young men and women in the prime of their lives,” the CEO added.

“The best way to describe silicosis is drowning in concrete in your lungs.”
