‘Nonsense’ decision putting children’s lives at risk
The decision to remove shark drumlines from Queensland’s coast has been slammed for putting the lives of children and families at risk.
The Queensland government failed to appeal a federal court decision in favour of The Humane Society International, who claimed drumlines are cruel and ineffective.
Just 24 hours after the ruling, more than 160 shark-control drumlines were removed from 27 beaches between Cairns and Gladstone.
Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley accused the state government of putting “politics ahead of public safety”.
Shadow Tourism Minister David Crisafulli tells Alan Jones it was a “nonsense” decision and a knee-jerk reaction that was “absolutely politically motivated”.
“The way the state government has conducted themselves in the last seven days should send a shiver up the spine of everyone who is involved in tourism and everyone who values the Queensland lifestyle.”

Shark drumlines have also been keeping Gold Coast beaches safe for the last 50 years.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says he’s concerned activists will come for their drumlines next.
“The group’s already said that they are going to try and expand and take it all the way down to the border.
“[The government] is just being led by the nose by the Greenie bureaucrats.”
