North coast MPs ‘shooting themselves in the foot’ with call to keep Sydney out
Northern NSW businesses are at their wits’ end with suggestions they’ll be isolated from the rest of the state for months to come.
A group of five north coast Nationals, Labor and Greens MPs want to keep Sydneysiders locked out of their communities after the statewide 70 per cent threshold is reached if local vaccine rates remain lower.
Supplies are plentiful in the region for those prepared to travel to get jabbed, but in areas such as Byron Bay less than 35 per cent of the population are fully vaccinated.
Bay Motel manager Michelle Visser told Jim Wilson tourism-reliant businesses in Byron such as hers are outraged by the MPs’ calls, with summer holidaymakers and Schoolies on the horizon.
“It’s like shooting yourselves in the foot.
“Of course we want to keep Byron safe … but realistically, to get to these kind of rates we’d have to hold people down to give it to them.
“There’s only so much you can take, this is the final straw.”
