‘Not safe for Jews’ – Sydney Uni under fire from Jewish groups after secret deal
Vice Chancellor Mark Scott’s handling of a pro-Palestinian encampment has alienated the Jewish community, prompting criticism and loss of confidence in the university’s ability to ensure Jewish students’ and staff’s safety.
Former Sydney Uni lecturer says campus not safe for Jews.
Shadow Education Minister Sarah Henderson criticises the University of Sydney for its failure to protect Jewish students and staff, calling for leadership changes and urging stronger enforcement of university rules.
Comment attributable to Minister for Education, Jason Clare:
“I have made it clear to universities that there is nothing more important than the safety of students and staff on campus.
“That must continue to be the number one priority of all universities.
“The federal regulator, TEQSA, has written to all universities outlining their responsibilities.
“And TEQSA has stood up a regulatory response team to proactively monitor the actions universities are taking.
“There is no place for the poison of antisemitism or any sort of racism in our universities or anywhere else.
“That’s why I have asked the Race Discrimination Commissioner to examine the prevalence and impact of racism, including antisemitism, at universities and make recommendations to the government about how we can ensure a safe environment for students.”
