Sculpture by the Sea founder David Handley revealed to Steve Price that while he’s considering alternative locations, he hasn’t ditched Bondi yet.

The future of the event is uncertain after Waverley Council angered Mr Handley and artists by installing a garish outdoor gym in one of the key locations.

“Very sad about what’s been happening, but now we’re celebrating this year’s show. The artists have gone to a lot of work, a lot of effort to put on the exhibition. In the coming months we’ll be working out whether we’re able to stay, or if we might put on a different show.”

Mr Handley isn’t ready to rule out any of Bondi’s competitors, “a number of other councils across NSW and interstate have put their hands up and already commissioned scoping studies – one’s already advanced a feasibility study.

“A few things this year took us by surprise, and we’ll leave it up to the people of Sydney. If they think putting a concrete path on a beautiful green headland is a good idea…”
