NSW Opposition vows to not spend a cent of taxpayer money on stadium rebuild
NSW Labor leader Michael Daley has declared he won’t spend taxpayer money building a new Sydney Football Stadium, if elected.
He tells Ben Fordham the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) Trust will need to take out a loan to fund the $700-million rebuild.
“I’ve put government and the SCG Trust on notice, that if I am elected premier in March next year, there’ll be no cash hand out… to be spent redeveloping [the] stadium.
“I’ll sit down with the Trust… after the election, if I’m the premier, and I will work with them to get finance to do it.”
Mr Daley says he’ll offer the Trust a concessional loan from the government, “but they’ll have to pay it back”.
“There’ll be no free money from the taxpayer,” he vows.
“When we say that we want to that money on schools and hospitals before stadiums, we mean it.”
He says the state government’s decision to knock down and rebuild the stadium is “deeply unpopular”.
“I’ve never seen anything like it.”
