Twice the number of drug tests will be rolled out on our roads to crack down on drug drivers.

The measures are part of a new plan announced by the state government, designed to address the road toll following a horror summer.

Roads Minister Melinda Pavey tells Ray Hadley those driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol will be punished.

“We’re doubling the amount of tests we’re doing and NSW is leading that. We also announced…we’re going to include cocaine in that.

“If you have drugs in your system through the swab at the roadside, you will be punished as well.”

The government will also get tougher on drink drivers, with low range drink drivers to receive on the spot suspensions.

“We need to send that message, you just can’t risk it. You can’t drink and drive.”

Ms Pavey says draft legislation on drink driving will be introduced to parliament in Spring.

Toll Group Managing Director, Michael Byrne, tells Ray what he thinks about preventing deaths on our roads.

“We see it every year Ray, every time at Christmas there’s more fatalities on the road…but in the end nothing’s done.”

Michael says he’s written to the Prime Minister’s office about heavy vehicle safety and received notification the letter had been received.

Later in the show, Ray revealed the Deputy Prime Minister’s office replied to the letter yesterday which stated: “I appreciate your suggestions and always welcome the views of the industry.”
