‘Obeid’s got nothing’: Crime Commission defends $30 million decision
The NSW Crime Commission has agreed to reopen its investigation into the proceeds of crime acquired by corrupt former MP Eddie Obeid and his family.
Earlier, the Commission told Ben Fordham they can’t get back Eddie Obeid’s $30 million in proceeds of crime amid outrage over the decision.
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that the NSW Crime Commission could have sought to confiscate the ill-gotten gains, but it was instead decided the Tax Office would pursue the tax that should have been paid on the money.
The NSW Premier hadn’t been made aware of the decision and told Ben Fordham he will “take action”.
NSW Crime Commissioner Michael Barnes told Ben properties aren’t registered to his name so there’s no money to claim back.
“There’s no $30 million sitting around, Obeid’s got nothing.
“We can only commence proceedings if there are properties there that we can seize and liquidate, that wasn’t able to be done.”

NSW Police Minister David Elliott said in a statement “I’ll be having further discussions with the Crime Commissioner because I’ve always thought that corrupt politicians need to be held to a higher account, given the position of privilege we accept.
“To that end, I think the Obeids should be given a priority regardless of other pressures on the Commission. Needless to say, Michael Barnes has my complete confidence – one of the best law enforcement officers this state has seen.”
