The boss of Origin Energy is backing a ramping up of coal as Australia faces an energy crisis.

Energy prices are forecast to skyrocket next month, with the market regulator allowing prices to rise by 18 per cent on July 1.

With gas prices soaring, there are calls for Australia to shore up its coal-fired capability.

Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria told Ben Australia needs to immediately ramp up coal generation.

“It’s fair to say that because we have an ageing coal plant fleet – they’re going to close as they come towards the end of their life.

“I think this is the challenge of building the new system while making sure there’s an orderly transition of the existing system.”
