Ousted Inner West mayor foreshadows ‘destabilising’ of councils across NSW
Former Inner West mayor Darcy Byrne has been removed from office and replaced overnight with Greens councillor Rochelle Porteous.
Councillor Byrne explained to Ray Hadley the temporary mayor has been installed for the duration between the original council election date and the December postponement.
“When the government delayed the elections, they failed to tidy up the process by extending the term of the mayors.
“So there will be ballots going on across Sydney … and potentially [in] lots of areas that are hotspots … which will obviously be destabilising.
“A simple direct election by the citizens of the mayor would be a better system, more democratic … and I’ll be continuing to advocate and fight for that up until the election in December.”
