Pat Cummins entertains ‘pretty crazy’ notion of Ashes squad captaincy
The 15-man Australian squad for the first two Ashes Tests has been named, but some positions remain up in the air.
Vice-captain and champion fast bowler Pat Cummins joined Jim Wilson exclusively after being named in the squad.
He told Jim Wilson Australia has a “well-rounded”, “strong and confident” team to take to the Gabba.
“You know what you’re going to get from all 15 players, and there’s a heap of experience.”
Captain Tim Paine is recovering from neck surgery, but Cummins said “he’ll definitely be right” for the Ashes.
“From all reports and speaking to him he’s feeling good … I think he was hoping for a game or two before that first test.”
In the worst case scenario, for Cummins to take on the captaincy would be “pretty crazy” he said.
“Growing up it’s one thing to dream to put on the baggy green, it’s a totally different thing to think that I’d potentially be leading that side.
“Hopefully it’s not the case!”
