‘Patrick showed some guts’: Wharfies union’s ‘ridiculous demand’ thwarted
Patrick Terminals and the Maritime Union of Australia have struck a deal that includes scrapping the union’s demand to have power over new hires.
The new arrangement, which includes a four per cent pay rise in the first year and 2.5 per cent in the subsequent three years for about 1000 workers at Patrick’s ports, is yet to be voted on.
The union was seeking to replicate a deal struck with Hutchison Ports where up to 70 per cent of new hires will be sourced from employees’ families and friends.
“Patrick showed some guts,” Ben said.
“The message for others is pretty simple: Don’t. Roll. Over.”
