Personal statement from Overnights host Michael McLaren

Michael McLaren has released a statement explaining why he hasn’t been on air in recent weeks.

Our much-loved Overnights host has been sorely missed while he’s been away, with many asking where he is.

Michael has been dealing with a very personal family situation for some time now.

He’s written this statement to his loyal listeners, and allowed us to share it with you.

Last year we learnt that my father had been diagnosed with cancer.

After many tests, it was discovered that the primary cancer was in his kidney and treatment was commenced.

Sadly, just over one year on (and after numerous tests, medicines, hospital admissions and operations) dad’s cancer has spread throughout his body and is no longer treatable.

As a result, he has now returned home to receive palliative care.

My wife and I had planned to take our annual holiday at the start of August but cancelled that to focus on dad’s care and I have since extended my leave to continue providing that care; hence my absence from the airwaves.

The time away from the microphone, however, has afforded me precious time with my dad. He is the most decent and honourable man I have ever known and despite the situation he faces, he’s approached every day with dignity and strength.

I wanted to put this statement together to let my listeners know why I have been off the air but also to thank all of those who have sent correspondence and well wishes these past weeks.

I want to also extend my thanks to Luke Grant who has done a wonderful job holding the fort in my absence.

And I must also thank the Management for their ongoing support at this difficult time.

I will be back with you on Overnights as soon as possible. Until then, on behalf of my family, I thank you all for your prayers as we come to terms with dad’s condition and the road ahead.

Michael McLaren

Michael’s replacement, Luke Grant, shared the message, expressing his sincerest condolences on behalf of all of us here at Macquarie Radio and, no doubt, on behalf of Michael’s listeners.

“It’s very difficult doing this, not wanting to breach confidence.

“But now that statement fills in, in many of your minds I would hope, what’s going on.

“We’re thinking of you [Michael] in this very, very difficult time.”
