Phil Gould: ‘I would really like to see the whole referee division blown up’

The NRL referee boss has admitted the bunker made a mistake in awarding a controversial late try to St George in yesterday’s Anzac Day match.

The Dragons were leading 18-8 over the Roosters with 11 minutes left on the clock when St George’s winger Nene Macdonald crossed the line in the corner.

Try was on the on-field call and a try was awarded but it’s since been conceded the call was wrong.

Penrith Panthers General Manager and Channel 9 NRL commentator Phil Gould tells Ben Fordham the way the game is refereed is “out of control”.

“The referees themselves, unchecked by the game… are so technical in what they do it’s like they’re trying to find some way to prove they’re smarter than us or smarter than the average man.”

Phil says although he doesn’t know what happens next, there could be merit in going back to the drawing board.

“I don’t know what the answer is to this other than I would really like to see the whole referee division blown up and started again.”
