A local energy company is attempting to turn plastic into a renewable and sustainable energy source.

The plan is to create the process through plasma gasification, which will recycle unrecyclable waste.

Less than 12% of the 3.2 million tonnes of plastic in Australia is recycled and up to 130,000 tonnes will find its way into Australian waterways and the ocean.

Director of Australian Waste to Energy Rob Horton told Ben Fordham they have the ability to execute the concept but are waiting for the tick of approval from the government.

“We want to bring it into Australia … and refine the process,” he said.

“It’s been overseas for a number of years throughout Europe and America, and it hasn’t happened in Australia.”

The director also said the concept will create more jobs for Australians once approved.
