58% of Australian employers have hired a retiree in the past 12 months

Clinton Maynard

Luke is joined by Nicole Gorton, Director at specialised recruitment agency Robert Half, whose independent research reveals that over half of Australian employers (58%) have rehired retired individuals in the past year.  Driven by Australia’s skills shortage, this has prompted businesses to explore various avenues, including reintegrating retirees into the workforce.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports a significant increase of 40,600 employed workers aged 65 and over compared to the previous year, as retirees seek to enhance their income and cope with rising living costs.

Employers find hiring retirees to be a successful strategy, with 47% willing to repeat it. Additionally, 37% are open to considering this approach in the future, while only 5% have no plans to hire retirees.

Employers primarily value retirees for their specialized expertise (60%), ability to make immediate contributions (57%), strong business acumen and knowledge of key issues (51%), and potential to mentor less experienced colleagues (49%).
