Almost 1 in 10 aged care residents still going hungry

Bill Woods

Bill Woods speaks with Dietitians Australia CEO Robert Hunt, about a disturbing report indicating one in ten aged care residents are continuing to lose weight from the “appalling” meals they are being served.

Prior to getting into power, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed aged care residents were “literally starving” and made this one of his main election campaign issues.

“We all know someone in aged care, and many of us will end up in these facilities ourselves in later life”, says Mr Hunt.

“Mealtimes should be one of the most enjoyable and satisfying parts of the day for residents in aged care.”

“If the Government wants to ensure aged care residents get access to healthy, nutritious and appealing meals that meet recommended dietary requirements, then Accredited Practising Dietitians have to be at the table to make this a reality.”
