Aussie mum living in Israel fears for her children called up to fight
Luke is joined by Lisa Segelov, an Australian woman living in Israel, who relates her concerns for her three children who have been called up by the Israeli army to fight against Hamas.
Ms Segelov moved to Israel in her 20s and worked as a lawyer in Tel Aviv, and her children hold dual Australian-Israeli citizenship. Her daughter Lior, who just celebrated her birthday, is completing her mandatory military service in an elite unit, while her sons Tomer and Avi were recently drafted as reservists, following speculation of a possible ground assault in Gaza. Tomer is a 22-year-old operations soldier in a tank unit, and Avi, 27, serves in a combat tank unit.
She expresses her shock at the level of brutality and violence in ordinary suburban neighborhoods, something she had not anticipated over her decades in Israel.
Despite the recent violence and hostilities, Ms Segelov maintains her belief in Israel as a safe place to live and work and remains proud of her Australian heritage while feeling a deep connection to Israel. She continues to work as a lawyer in Tel Aviv and hopes that Israel will overcome the current situation.
