Chinese car makers are enjoying strong growth – 15,843 sales in July
representing a 130 percent increase on July last year. MG, Haval and BYD were
joined earlier this year by the return of Chery which left our market nearly 10
years ago with a reputation for poor quality. Chery returned with the oddly named
Chery Omoda 5 – a small 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder automatic front wheel
drive SUV – two models – the Omoda 5 BX at $32,990 drive-away and the flagship
Omoda 5 EX at $35,490 drive-away. On first impression rather stylish with an
individual presence, generously equipped for the money supported by a seven-
year unlimited kilometre warranty, seven-year capped price servicing and
roadside assistance and the recipient of a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The
Omoda 5 BX features LED headlights, dual zone air, wireless phone charging,
power driver’s seat and 18-inch alloys, the Omoda 5 EX adding a power tailgate,
sunroof, 360-degree surround view camera, heated seats and red brake calipers
and wheel highlights. The driver assist technology extensive plus the cabin
spacious with dual 10.25-inch touch screens and faux leather trim. The Chery
Omoda 5 value story compelling, disappointingly the drive experience is not and
