Companies back away from diversity issues

Mike Jeffreys

Mike speaks with Barry Urquhart, Managing Director of Marketing Focus, about companies stepping back from diversity issues, citing Toyota’s decision to scale back its DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) and pro-LGBTQ activities following recent controversy.

Toyota plans to focus more on STEM education and workforce readiness, pulling back from initiatives like the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index.

At the Australian Human Resources Institute’s national conference, only one session focused on DEI, competing with seminars on worker retention.

While there’s no data to suggest Australian companies are abandoning DEI, the economic climate and shifting attitudes may signal a change in priorities.
