Downsizers need more incentives to make the move

Clinton Maynard

With an ongoing housing crisis with no end in sight and a rapidly ageing population, more needs to be done to encourage older Australians to downsize (or right size) to help free up existing housing stock.

The latest ABS data shows there were almost 13 million spare bedrooms in Australia at last count, with many empty nesters living in homes with more bedrooms than needed.

While the federal government has introduced superannuation contribution incentives, and some state governments have introduced stamp duty concessions for downsizers, it’s clearly not enough to encourage asset rich but cash poor homeowners to downsize.

Brian Stevens, CEO & founder of MyBrix, explains to Mike what’s driving downsizers’  reluctance to make the move, and outlines what further policy changes or incentives could be offered to encourage older Aussies to make the move.
