Easter drug driving infringements are growing cause for concern

Motor Torque

Enforcing road safety at Easter has become a major concern and one can sympathise with Police for the challenges they face with a small percentage of drivers despite double demerits points in place. Eight people lost their lives over the four-day period, but some other statistics really raise concern. The 295 positive drink driving infringements came from 232,092 roadside breath tests – representing 0.1 percent of those tested, but the real surprise, 863 positive drug infringements from 17,256 roadside drug tests, a staggering 5 percent of those tested. Clearly, drug driving in on the increase and the amount of roadside testing needs to increase – one only has to look at recent drug seizures to determine that drug testing needs an overhaul. It’s obvious a lot more than 5 percent of the driving population have some sort of drugs in their system.
