Economists back RBA as Albanese denies inflation link to Govt spending

Mike Jeffreys

Mike is joined by Leith Van Onselen, Chief Economist at the MB Fund and MB Super, and Co-founder of MacroBusiness, to discuss the growing tension between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) over inflation.

Albanese has denied that state and federal budget spending is contributing to higher inflation forecasts, contradicting the RBA’s recent report.

The RBA has delayed its forecast for underlying inflation to fall within the 2-3 percent target range by six months, attributing this partly to increased public demand driven by government spending.

Despite Albanese’s denial, economists are siding with the RBA, suggesting the Prime Minister’s assessment is off the mark.
