Homelessness among older women an increasing problem
Michael speaks with Fiona York, Housing for the Aged Action Group (HAAG) executive officer, about the increasing problem of homelessness among older women following NSW’s recent inquiry into homelessness among people aged 55 and older.
“Long social housing wait lists mean these women are left to compete in the private rental market where the little savings they do have are quickly spent on rent”, says Mrs York.
“If the government wants to reduce homelessness among older, single women, then what it must do is invest in social housing and lower the priority age for that housing.”
“It’s unacceptable that a single, older women must wait until she is 80 years old before she is considered a priority,” she says.
