Independent review into our toll charges seems to offer little hope of relief

Three days of public hearings this week, Professor Alan Fels in charge of a long
overdue independent review into Sydney’s toll roads. A difficult task and the fact
that 11 of our 13 toll roads are handled by one entity Transurban. Professor Fels
however has suggested that drivers shouldn’t expect revolutionary change but he
does suggest there is some scope to negotiate some win win outcomes, but
concedes the overall toll system is not very well organised with many long term
contracts which limit possible outcomes. I personally pay an ever-increasing
amount of toll each year to travel on the M2 Motorway which continues to
deteriorate into a dog track. The Government may not be able to renegotiate a
fairer deal but surely a toll operator should be made to provide a tarmac that is
first class and fitting for the ever growing toll charge. I’m David Berthon
