Jim Haynes’ not-so-famous Aussie characters

Luke Grant

Aussie historian, author & entertainer Jim Haynes joins Overnight each week for his unique knowledge of the not-so-famous characters from Australia’s history. This week Jim shines the spotlight on George Sargent – The Princess And The Colonel.

George Sargent (1859–1921) was an Australian businessman, cook and caterer who together with his wife Charlotte and their son Foster Sargent, founded Sargent’s meat pies company in 1906.

They started selling pies for a penny in a small shop in Paddington, New South Wales in 1891 and by 1913 were producing 150,000 pies per week at their factory in Burton Street, Darlinghurst.
