Kevin McCarthy ousted as House Speaker

Clinton Maynard

Luke is joined by Adam Creighton, Washington correspondent with The Australian, following Kevin McCarthy being ousted as the U.S. House Speaker in a Republican rebellion.

McCarthy was voted out of his position in a historic move, making him the first speaker in US history to be ousted by a majority vote of members. This development has thrown Congress into chaos, just weeks before it needs to secure funding to prevent a government shutdown.

In a 216 to 210 vote within the 435-member House of Representatives, McCarthy was forced to step down from his position, with eight Republicans aligning themselves with all Democrats present.

Congressman Matt Gaetz of Florida, along with a group of Republicans critical of McCarthy’s leadership for months, initiated the motion for a vote on McCarthy’s removal as House Speaker, ultimately leading to his downfall.
