Talking about Volvo’s top-spec XC60 T8 Polestar engineered plug-in hybrid  – the flagship of the 7-model XC60 range at $98,990 – loaded with huge amount of safety, both passive and active, a sporty model despite it hybrid technology offering a cost saving to other top-shelf medium SUV’s like Mercedes GLC43 and BMW’s X3 M40i and about the same money at Audi’s SQ5 – the Volvo XC60 more than a match in features, stylish, roomy and full of technology with a fabulous interior including a top-class sound system, all superbly executed. With 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre petrol engine sending power and torque to the front wheels, the rear axle powered by an electric motor.

This power combination drives through an eight-speed automatic providing a very sporty performance – the internal combustion engine can be decoupled to drive the vehicle on pure electric power – the 10.4 kW battery providing around 45 km of electric driving range. The official combined fuel economy of 2.2L/100 is certainly achievable but requires an evening charge whereas I managed 4.8L/100km with inconsistent charging over the course of a week. The central portrait orientated 9-inch infotainment screen very intuitive, the 12.3-inch screen in front of you full of information with superb clarity. Few areas of complaint – ride quality on the 21–inch wheels a little firm while Volvo presently only has a three-year warranty although an announcement is pending to extend it to five years backdated to April 1.
