Queensland opposition calls for Royal Commission into corruption

Luke Grant

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced yesterday that the famed and esteemed QC Tony Fitzgerald would head an inquiry into the Crime and Corruption Commission, no doubt hoping that will dampen media and public interest into the things she doesn’t want to talk about.  But the Courier Mail tells us the public should not be tricked into conflating two issues into one.

They say this inquiry will do important and timely work in considering questions raised around the culture, powers and actions of the CCC in laying charges, but it hasn’t been set up to do anything wider than that. It is not, in fact, a broad, corruption-busting, integrity-focused inquiry.

Luke Grant speaks with Queensland opposition leader David Crisafulli, who says “the past week has been the darkest for transparency in over three decades since moonlight was replaced with sunlight in our state” adding that under the cover of Covid-19, Premier Palaszczuk views these explosive revelations as a media issue she can ride out, rather than a corruption issue she must stamp out.
