Speedway fans upset at the forced acquisition of Sydney Speedway
Speedway fans are understandably upset at the proposed closure of Valvoline Speedway at Granville to be acquired for the new Sydney metro line between Parramatta and the CBD. One hopes Andrew Constance keeps his promise to ensure an alternative site is found before the current speedway is acquired. We forget that at one time Sydney sported five dirt track Speedways back – we deserve a world class Speedway in this town and certainly the obvious place is Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek. I reminisce often of Empire Speedway at the Sydney Showground – Saturday night at the bull pit as it was referred to was indeed special – to watch the legendary American midget driver Bob Tattersall race his Offenhauser had you on the edge of your seat – as a 16 year old working at the BP Garage at Epping on a Sunday where it was stored – my first job, to clean the Offenhauser down after a night of racing – pure heaven.
