Sydney’s excessive road tolls yet road maintenance at an all time low

David Berthon

Further on excessive toll road charges in Sydney and with increases indexed to rise each quarter tolls are becoming a major burden on Sydney motorists.  I spoke earlier about the daily return commute to the city from Windsor Road Baulkham Hills now $28,24 a day – Highway Robbery given the state of the M2 Hills Motorway, its broken-up surface now little better than a second-rate country road.

Opened in 2007 with a toll of $2.50 it’s in dire need of repair and the Toll operator Transurban should be held accountable by the State Government for its proper upkeep. However, Transurban seem keener on restoring its dreadful plastic artwork at Macquarie Park than giving their paying customers a road surface to match its excessive toll of $8.56 for cars, $25.67 for Trucks.

Road maintenance from my observation in Sydney is well below that of Melbourne, the Gore Hill Freeway gets little attention, the Harbour Bridge approaches are dirty with ever increasing amounts of Graffiti, the Bridge surface itself in poor condition in parts with worn lane signage and marking.

And despite its recent 90-year celebrations the Bridge’s condition beckons in parts, at least six of its exquisite art deco lights are missing and its lane change sequencing needs modern imbedded lights in the road surface for better safety. Sydney motorists simply deserve better.
