The No vote wins… and that’s great for Australia!

Clinton Maynard

Luke is joined once again by Ramesh Thakur, Emeritus professor at ANU’s Crawford School of Public Policy and former UN assistant secretary-general.

Professor Thakur discusses the recent 45th Australian referendum to amend the constitution, a challenging process with only eight successful attempts out of 44.  Despite the majority national vote, it failed due to a 3-3 deadlock among the states. Only 33 out of 151 parliamentary seats voted in favor.  Notably, Canberra unanimously supported the amendment, revealing the “Canberra bubble.”

High Indian-ancestry population areas voted against the amendment, signaling a shift from previous support for Labor.  The $365 million referendum, endorsed by various institutions but funded with shareholder and public money, highlights a growing gap between elites and the majority, although it’s unlikely to prompt self-reflection among the elite.
