The Republican cause is no match for the star power of the monarchy

Mike Jeffreys

Mike is joined by Gerard Henderson, Author, Columnist, Political Commentator & Executive Director of the Sydney Institute, whose recent article reflects on Australia’s 1999 republican referendum and the current state of the republican movement.

Despite early hopes for change, the movement has stalled, and support hasn’t surged following Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

Mr Henderson critiques the Australian Republic Movement’s recent efforts, including an unsuccessful letter to King Charles III, while touching on the enduring conspiracy theories surrounding the 1975 dismissal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, debunking claims that the palace was involved.
