Think twice before you gift a dog for Christmas

Clinton Maynard

Clinton Maynard is joined by Kathy Kopellis McLeod, dog behavior consultant, on the vexing subject of gifting a dog for Christmas.

Rescue organisations will tell you that giving a puppy as a Christmas present doesn’t always have a fairy tale ending. The weeks after Christmas are a time where they cringe as ‘unwanted presents’, are discarded just as flippantly as material gifts are given away without much thought.

Kathy says a puppy is a lifelong commitment which deserves more than an emotionally charged, ill thought-out purchase. Consider the person who the pup will ultimately go to and the ongoing costs, dedication, commitment, and love that needs to be invested.
