Toyota Subaru and Mazda combine forces on next generation internal combustion engines
News out of Japan this week with Toyota, Subaru and Mazda announcing they’re joining forces to produce next-generation internal combustion engines (ICE) despite many rivals no longer investing in petrol and diesel power. The trio of Japanese car manufacturers will share development costs and instead of creating just one common engine will each produce a signature engine, representative of their respective brand. Toyota will produce a new generation of in-line four- cylinders, Subaru a new family of horizontally-opposed boxer engines while Mazda will once again develop a new rotary engine. The engines won’t be purely petrol-fueled, the trio stating they will feature alternative fuels, such as biofuels, synthetic e-fuels and hydrogen. Despite the news Toyota is still backing EV’s and will have 30 new electric models by 2030, Subaru also aiming to have an 8-model EV line-up by 2028.
